Gasherbrum I Expedition (8,080 m) -30 Days

0.0 / 5

 OVERVIEW

Gasherbrum I, standing at 8,080 meters (26,510 feet), is the 11th highest mountain in the world and one of the most striking peaks in the Karakoram Range, located on the border between Pakistan and China. Known also as Hidden Peak, it earned its name due to its remote location and the fact that it remained largely unknown to the outside world until the early 20th century. The first successful ascent was made in 1958 by an American team led by Nicholas Clinch, marking a major achievement in Himalayan climbing history.

At K2 Trekking and Expedition, we offer a professionally organized Gasherbrum I Expedition, designed to give climbers the best possible chance of success. Our expedition follows the Normal Route, commonly known as the Japanese Couloir, which although less technically difficult compared to some other 8000-meter peaks, demands excellent physical conditioning, strong mountaineering skills, and experience at high altitude. The expedition typically lasts around 50 to 55 days, allowing for proper acclimatization and multiple rotation climbs before a final summit push.

The best season to attempt Gasherbrum I is between June and August, when the Karakoram experiences its most stable weather conditions. We ensure full support throughout the expedition, providing experienced high-altitude climbing guides, a strong and reliable base camp team, and all logistical arrangements from Islamabad to base camp and beyond. Our base camp setup includes high-quality tents, kitchen and dining facilities, communication systems, and basic medical support.

Participants will benefit from comprehensive services, including all necessary climbing permits, domestic flights or road transport to Skardu, professional cooks, helpers, and high-altitude porters for carrying loads to the higher camps. Oxygen support is also available if required, at additional cost.

Joining our Gasherbrum I Expedition means you will be part of a small, focused climbing team with personalized support, giving you a better chance to reach the summit safely while enjoying the extraordinary beauty of the Karakoram.

Expand All
Location : Islamabad

Arrive in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital city, where you will be welcomed by our team. After completing the necessary paperwork, you will have an orientation briefing about the expedition, including an overview of the route, safety procedures, and final preparations. Overnight accommodation in a comfortable hotel in Islamabad, with dinner and rest to prepare for the journey ahead.

Location : Skardu

In the morning, you will board a domestic flight to Skardu, the gateway to the Karakoram. The flight is one of the most scenic in the world, offering breathtaking views of the mighty mountains. In case of any delays due to weather, we will travel by road, which takes approximately 16 hours. Once in Skardu, we will rest for the night and prepare for the trek ahead.

Location : Askoli

After a restful night in Skardu, we begin our journey by road towards Askole, the last settlement before the trek. The drive takes us through picturesque valleys and rugged terrain, offering stunning views of the Karakoram Range. Once in Askole, we rest for the night and get ready for the trek to base camp the following day.

Location : Paiju

From Askole, we begin the trek through the Braldu Valley, making our way to Paiju, a lush and scenic campsite. Along the way, we cross the Braldu River and pass through rocky terrain. This two-day trek offers an opportunity to acclimatize while trekking through the rugged beauty of the Karakoram. Overnight camps will be set up in Paiju, where we will rest and prepare for the next leg of the journey.

Location : Urdukas

From Paiju, the trail continues to Urdukas, a stunning campsite located on the Baltoro Glacier. This section of the trek involves crossing rocky terrain and getting our first views of the towering peaks of the Karakoram. The trek to Urdukas is a critical part of our acclimatization process, and we will take a rest day here to ensure that the team is well-prepared for the next phase of the journey.

Location : Concordia

From Urdukas, we continue our trek along the Baltoro Glacier, making our way to Goro II. The trek takes us through glacier moraine and rocky paths, where the majestic peaks of Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, and Broad Peak come into view. We will spend a rest day at Goro II, allowing climbers to acclimatize and prepare for the climb to Concordia and base camp.

Location : Base Camp

After leaving Goro II, we trek through the Baltoro Glacier and reach Concordia, the breathtaking meeting point of several glaciers. From Concordia, it is a short trek to Gasherbrum I Base Camp, where we will set up our primary base for the climb. The next few days will be spent organizing the camp, checking equipment, and preparing for the climb.

Location : Acclimatization

At base camp, we start the process of acclimatization by rotating through Camp I and Camp II. This is essential for climbers to adjust to the high-altitude conditions. During this phase, we will establish high camps and position supplies for the summit push. These days will be dedicated to familiarizing ourselves with the route, adjusting to altitude, and preparing mentally and physically for the final ascent.

Location : Climbing

During this phase, we make multiple ascents to higher camps, each time staying a few nights to ensure proper acclimatization. Climbers will ascend to Camp III and return to base camp in between rotations. This stage will prepare everyone for the summit push. Our guides will ensure that fixed ropes are placed and all the technical aspects of the climb are in order. This period is crucial for building strength and ensuring climbers are ready for the final ascent.

Location : Climbing

The summit push will begin early in the morning, with the aim to reach the summit of Gasherbrum I (8,080m). Climbers will navigate challenging ice and rock terrain, using fixed ropes, and will reach the summit in the late afternoon. The view from the top is nothing short of extraordinary, with panoramic vistas of the Karakoram Range. After spending a short time at the summit for photographs and celebrations, the descent will begin immediately, as high-altitude climbers know that descent is just as important as the ascent.

Location : Base Camp

After successfully summiting, climbers will descend back to Base Camp for rest and recuperation. The journey down is critical to avoid altitude sickness and ensure proper recovery after the strenuous summit attempt. The descent will take two days, with climbers reaching base camp for a well-deserved rest.

Location : Skardu

After resting at base camp, the team will begin the descent back down the Baltoro Glacier, retracing the steps back to Askole. Along the way, we will enjoy the beauty of the Karakoram one last time. Once back in Askole, we will board vehicles and drive to Skardu.

Location : Islamabad

From Skardu, we will fly back to Islamabad, where the expedition officially concludes. A farewell dinner will be arranged to celebrate the success of the team and the completion of the Gasherbrum I Expedition. Participants will have the chance to rest before departing for their home countries.
